Yakshagana Dance from Karnataka

Yakshagana is a 400-year-old folk dance in a theatrical form from Karnataka. Traditionally, it was only performed by men and in the open air. In the 1970s, however, women started learning the art and performances were moved indoor as well.

The costumes are traditional and vivid. The men wear a vest and a dhoti. The jewelry is made out of wood, paper, canvas and cloth. Kiritas (headgear) are also worn. Instruments used are the bells (taalas), drums (chande) and maddale (a local instrument).

The dance steps are complicated and require rigorous training. In particular, the knee twists and mid-air twirls.

Performances usually depict scenes from the Indian epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana.
